So When Will You Think About the Prom?

1 Comment

That’s the question I have been asking my daughter for months!  When my nieces were in their junior year of high school, each started visualizing her gown for the senior prom.  Not my daughter or her best friends.  The end of junior year was too early.  The summer between junior and senior year was too early.  The start of her senior year of high school was too early.  She told me there were too many other things to think about: SATs, ACTs, AP exams, HSA exams, etc.  At least she knew what was a priority and what wasn’t.  Beginning of this year?  Still too early.  One month before prom, Y announces that she knows what type of dress she wants.  Oh, and here’s an email with the type of dresses G likes.  Oh, and D wants to know if you can make her dress?  I rolled my eyes at Y.  She gave me her best Mommy-you-know-you-love-me smile and went back into her room.  Yes, I love her and her best friends, so I will stress myself to create their dresses.

I sketched together Y’s ideas into her dress in 5 minutes.  I have to give her a little bit of praise, when she decides, she decides!  She doesn’t bother with second guessing.  I ordered the trims for Y’s gown.

Today I met with G and scolded her.  She loves the pleated skirt on one of the gowns.  Had she come to me sooner, it would have been possible.  She could have purchased the polyester charmeuse in a color she loved and we could have sent it out to be pleated.  The pleated skirt panels that are available online are not in the color she wants, and even those take 2-3 weeks to get.  Today I sketched her ideas into a dress, ordered her trims, measured her, created a muslin bodice, and fitted the bodice to her.

I will meet with D later this week.  Next weekend is fabric shopping.  As you can see, I will be sewing prom dresses throughout April. ):-}

I started sewing when I was 11 years old, and had my own clients when I was 12. I graduated from the H.S. of Fashion Industries, majoring in fashion design. I expanded my technical background by attending evening classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology and working many years at a major pattern company. I have been creating custom wedding gowns and evening dresses for more years than I care to count. I LOVE WORKING WITH FABRICS. I love fine sewing techniques. I love creating beautiful dresses.
